Definition

LLM citations are the source attributions that AI language models include when they reference external content in a generated response, linking back to the websites or documents from which they drew information. When Perplexity answers a question and shows numbered sources, or when Google AI Overviews shows small site thumbnails below the generated text, those are LLM citations. Being cited is one of the primary ways businesses gain visibility in AI-driven search, particularly for informational queries where no click ever occurs.

How It Works

AI systems that use retrieval-augmented generation pull content from indexed sources and then attribute that content when they generate a response. The systems prioritize sources that are credible, clearly structured, and specific enough to support the claims being made. Being cited is a signal that your content passed the retrieval step and that the AI trusted it enough to include as a source.

Not all LLMs cite sources. Older ChatGPT versions without browsing do not cite in real time. But Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Bing Copilot, and ChatGPT with browsing all do, and citation patterns across these systems are increasingly important signals for business visibility.

Why It Matters

A citation in an AI-generated answer puts your business in front of a user at the moment they are forming an opinion, without requiring them to navigate to you directly. Repeated citations across multiple queries build recognition. For a local service business, being cited as a source for useful information about your industry establishes you as the go-to name before a prospect is even actively shopping.
