E-E-A-T

AI & SEO

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness: the four qualities Google uses to evaluate whether a website's content is credible and worth showing to users, especially for topics that affect people's health, finances, or safety.

Definition

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness: the four qualities Google uses to evaluate whether a website's content is credible and worth showing to users, especially for topics that affect people's health, finances, or safety. The framework comes from Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines, which human reviewers use to assess pages. But its principles apply directly to AI systems as well, which rely on similar signals to decide which sources to cite and which to skip.

How It Works

Each letter captures a different dimension of credibility. Experience means the content comes from someone with real, first-hand familiarity with the topic. Expertise means the author or organization has relevant knowledge or credentials. Authoritativeness means the site is recognized as a go-to source in its space, which is reflected in links, mentions, and citations from other credible sites. Trustworthiness covers accuracy, transparency about who runs the site, honest reviews, and secure infrastructure.

For a small business, building E-E-A-T means publishing content written or reviewed by real practitioners, showing author bios, getting mentioned in industry publications, earning genuine customer reviews, and keeping business information accurate and consistent everywhere it appears online.

Why It Matters

Google explicitly uses E-E-A-T to assess pages before deciding whether to show them in results or cite them in AI Overviews. A business with strong E-E-A-T signals is treated as a trustworthy source. One with weak signals, even if the content appears relevant, is deprioritized. This matters especially for service businesses where trust is the deciding factor for a prospect choosing who to call.

Example

A nutritionist builds E-E-A-T by publishing articles under her name with credentials listed, getting quoted in local news coverage about dietary trends, collecting verified client reviews, and keeping her "About" page current with her education and certifications. Google treats her site as an authoritative source on nutrition topics, and AI Overviews begin citing her articles when answering questions about meal planning for specific health conditions.
