Title Tag

Traditional SEO

A title tag is the HTML element that defines the title of a web page, displayed as the clickable headline in search results and in browser tabs, and it is one of the most important on-page SEO factors for signaling what a page is about.

Definition

A title tag is the HTML element that defines the title of a web page, displayed as the clickable headline in search results and in browser tabs, and it is one of the most important on-page SEO factors for signaling what a page is about. It is written in the section of a page as Your Page Title Here. A well-written title tag tells both users and search engines exactly what the page covers, includes the target keyword, and motivates users to click.

How It Works

Google displays title tags as the blue clickable link in search results, typically up to about 60 characters before truncating. The title tag should include the primary keyword you want the page to rank for, ideally near the beginning of the title. It should also be compelling enough to earn a click: specific, clear, and relevant to the query.

Google sometimes rewrites title tags in search results when it determines the page's H1 or other text better represents the content, but the tag you write is the starting point and Google respects it most of the time.

Why It Matters

The title tag is the single most visible piece of your on-page SEO work. It is what users read before they decide to click. It is what Google uses most heavily when assessing what a page is about. Getting the title tag right on your key pages is one of the highest-leverage actions in all of on-page SEO, and it requires no technical skills beyond access to your website's content management system.

Example

A garage door repair company's homepage title is "Welcome to Smith's Garage Services." No keyword, no location, no service specificity. After changing it to "Garage Door Repair and Installation | Charlotte, NC | Smith's Garage," the page begins ranking for garage door repair queries in Charlotte, and click-through rate from search improves because the title now matches what users are searching.
