Structured Data

Definition
Structured data is any content formatted in a standardized, machine-readable way so that search engines and AI systems can parse and use specific pieces of information reliably, rather than having to interpret it from unstructured prose. On the web, structured data most commonly refers to schema markup formats like JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa that label what information means, not just what it says. Structured data is the backbone of rich search results, knowledge panels, and AI-cited facts.
How It Works
Unstructured data is a paragraph of text: the reader (human or machine) has to read it and infer what it means. Structured data is a labeled field: "telephone": "+1-312-555-0100". No inference required.
For websites, structured data is most often implemented through JSON-LD schema markup embedded in the page source. Google, Bing, and AI indexing systems read this structured data alongside the visible content. When a data point is structured, it can be used directly in knowledge panels, voice search answers, AI overviews, and other features that require reliable facts.
Common structured data types for small businesses include LocalBusiness, Product, Service, FAQ, HowTo, Review, Event, and Article.
Why It Matters
AI systems are fundamentally pattern-matching on data. Structured data is the clearest data you can give them. A service business that has structured data labeling its services, location, hours, and FAQ will be parsed more accurately and cited more confidently than a competitor whose information is buried in unformatted paragraphs. As AI-generated answers become more common, structured data becomes more valuable, not less.
Example
A home inspector adds structured data to each service page listing what the inspection covers, the areas served, the typical turnaround time, and the price range. When a home buyer asks a voice assistant "how long does a home inspection take in [city]," the answer can be pulled directly from that structured data field, and the inspector's business is cited as the source.
