Content & Social

Reels are Instagram's short-form video format, displayed as vertical clips up to 90 seconds long and distributed through Instagram's main feed, Explore tab, and a dedicated Reels tab.

Definition

Reels is Instagram's primary format for short video content, introduced in 2020 to compete with TikTok. Reels are algorithmically distributed beyond a creator's existing followers, which makes them one of the few formats on Instagram that can reach new audiences without paid promotion. A Reel can be filmed natively in the app or uploaded as an edited video. Instagram heavily favors Reels in its content distribution algorithm compared to static image posts.

How It Works

Reels can be created directly in the Instagram app using its built-in camera and editing tools, or edited externally and uploaded. Key elements include: a hook in the first two seconds, on-screen text for viewers watching without sound, a clear subject, and a direct close. Reels up to 60 seconds tend to receive stronger distribution than longer clips. Instagram's algorithm tracks completion rate: videos that get watched all the way through are shown to more people. This means a 20-second video with high completion outperforms a 90-second video that most viewers abandon at the halfway point. Reels can be shared to Stories, cross-posted to Facebook, and saved to a profile grid. For businesses with a strong visual component, Reels and short-form video are the highest-leverage content formats on the platform. They can also be a source of user-generated content when customers tag the business in their own Reels.

Why It Matters

Instagram's organic reach for static posts has declined significantly over the past several years. Reels remain the exception. The platform actively promotes Reels content, which means businesses using this format consistently can grow their audience without advertising spend. For visual trades, food businesses, and service businesses with demonstrable work, Reels provide direct evidence of quality at the moment a buyer is evaluating options.

Example

A custom cake designer posts one Reel per week showing the assembly of a design from sketch to final delivery. No narration, music only, with the business name and location as text overlay. Each video gets between three and fifteen times the reach of a static photo of the same cake. New inquiries consistently mention seeing a specific Reel.
