Query fan-out is a technique used by AI search systems where a single user question is automatically expanded into multiple related sub-queries, allowing the system to gather information from many angles before synthesizing a comprehensive answer. Google uses query fan-out in AI Mode to process complex questions. Instead of searching for one thing, the system fans out into a cluster of searches, pulls results from each, and combines them into a single response. This is why AI answers often feel more thorough than any single search result.
How It Works
When a user asks "how do I choose a contractor for a kitchen remodel," the AI system does not just search that phrase. It fans out into sub-queries like "what to look for in a kitchen remodel contractor," "how to verify contractor licensing," "questions to ask before hiring a contractor," "average cost of kitchen remodel," and more. It searches each, pulls the most relevant content, and assembles a cohesive answer.
Content that covers a topic comprehensively, including the related questions someone naturally would ask alongside the main query, is more likely to be retrieved across multiple fan-out sub-queries. This is why topical authority matters: a site that answers the full cluster of related questions gets cited more than one that answers only the top-level question.
Why It Matters
If your content only addresses the headline question, you get cited once at most. If your content addresses the headline question and several related questions, you have multiple opportunities to be retrieved across the fan-out. For service businesses, this means writing content that covers the full decision-making journey: what the service is, how to choose a provider, what questions to ask, what it costs, and what to watch out for.
Example
An electrician in Kansas City writes separate pages covering: how to find a licensed electrician, what electrical panel upgrades cost in Missouri, questions to ask before an electrical inspection, and signs of outdated wiring in older homes. When someone uses Google AI Mode to research hiring an electrician, the fan-out retrieves multiple pages from this site, and the electrician is cited across the full answer, not just one part of it.
