Keyword Difficulty
Traditional SEO
Keyword difficulty is a score that estimates how hard it would be for a new page to rank on the first page of Google for a specific keyword, based on the strength of the sites currently ranking for it.
Definition
Keyword difficulty is a score that estimates how hard it would be for a new page to rank on the first page of Google for a specific keyword, based on the strength of the sites currently ranking for it. Most SEO tools express this as a number from 0 to 100: low numbers indicate keywords where a well-optimized page can rank without much competition, high numbers indicate keywords dominated by large, high-authority sites that are difficult to displace. Keyword difficulty is one of the most important filters in keyword research.
How It Works
Keyword difficulty is calculated by analyzing the domain authority and backlink profiles of the pages currently ranking in the top ten results for a given keyword. If the top ten results are all major national publications and Fortune 500 companies, the difficulty will be very high. If the top ten results include several small business websites and local pages, the difficulty is lower and a new page has a genuine shot.
Different tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz) calculate this score differently, so the number should be used for comparison within one tool rather than treated as a fixed absolute metric.
Why It Matters
Targeting only high-difficulty keywords is a common mistake for small businesses. A new or mid-sized website investing in content that targets keywords with difficulty scores in the 70s and 80s will see little return, because the competition is simply too strong without years of domain authority behind you. Focusing on keywords with difficulty scores under 30 to 40, especially specific local and long-tail variants, produces faster results with the same amount of content effort.
Example
An insurance broker in Cincinnati wants to rank for "business insurance." The keyword difficulty score is 78, and the top results are national brands like State Farm and Progressive. Instead, the broker targets "general liability insurance for contractors Cincinnati" with a difficulty of 24. They rank on page one within two months and start receiving leads from local contractors.
