Internal Linking
Traditional SEO
Internal linking is the practice of adding hyperlinks within your website that connect one page to other pages on the same site, helping search engines understand your site structure and helping users navigate to related content.
Definition
Internal linking is the practice of adding hyperlinks within your website that connect one page to other pages on the same site, helping search engines understand your site structure and helping users navigate to related content. When you link from a blog post to a service page, or from a service page to a relevant FAQ, you are building a web of connections that signals topical relationships to Google. Internal links also distribute "link equity," passing ranking authority from strong pages to pages that need a boost.
How It Works
Every internal link creates a connection that search engine crawlers follow when mapping your site. A page with many internal links pointing to it is treated as important. A page that receives no internal links (an orphan page) may not be discovered or may be treated as low-priority.
Effective internal linking has three components: using descriptive anchor text so Google understands what the linked page is about, linking contextually where the connection is genuinely useful to the reader, and making sure important pages like service pages and location pages receive internal links from multiple other pages.
Why It Matters
Internal linking is one of the highest-leverage, lowest-cost SEO actions available to small businesses. It does not require earning links from other sites. It does not require technical development. It requires only attention to which pages on your own site support which other pages. A business that has published twenty blog posts but never linked from them to the service pages they are relevant to is leaving significant SEO value unrealized.
Example
A bookkeeping firm publishes a guide on "how to reconcile accounts in QuickBooks" and never links it to their bookkeeping services page. After adding a natural internal link with the anchor text "professional bookkeeping services for small businesses," the services page begins receiving more crawl attention and link equity from the well-performing guide. Rankings for the services page improve over the following weeks.
